Feast of St. Blaise is celebrated

First-grader Stephen Mazelis has his throat blessed by Father David Regan, associate pastor, as other students wait.

The feast of St. Blaise is observed annually on Feb. 3 and is marked by the blessing of the throats. The blessing is associated with the fourth-century bishop and martyr credited with saving the life of a boy choking on a fish bone. Students and staff at St. Patrick’s School, Smithtown, had an opportunity to have their throats blessed after attending the parish’s First Friday Mass, which this year coincided with the feast of St. Blaise.
Third-grader Emily Pisano has her throat blessed by school principal Rita Swift.

Sixth-grade teacher Virginia DiSpaltro has her throat blessed by Father David Regan.
